320 kW Solar + 500 kWh Storage for an Off-Grid Mountain Resort

A 60-villa resort at 2,800 m elevation in Yunnan Province replaced its round-the-clock diesel generation with a BeSafe H50 battery microgrid. The result: 87% reduction in diesel runtime, silent overnight power for guests, and a new "carbon-neutral stay" marketing positioning.

The Site

The resort sits on a 14-hectare site in Shangri-La, Yunnan, surrounded by old-growth forest. Connection to the regional grid would have required 28 km of mountain transmission line and was cost-prohibitive. Before the microgrid upgrade, the resort ran two 250 kVA diesel generators 24/7, switching loads between them. Diesel was trucked in over a single winding mountain road — 2,200 L every 9 days, at increasing cost.

Guest load was growing (occupancy was rising year-on-year), but the site was already at the practical limit of its diesel infrastructure. Generator maintenance intervals were shortening due to continuous heavy load, and the noise was a constant source of guest complaints — particularly at night, when the generators had to run to keep villa heating and hot water operational.

Why a Battery-First Microgrid

The resort's engineering team evaluated three options: (a) add a third diesel generator, (b) extend the grid connection, (c) build a solar-plus-storage microgrid. The microgrid won on three dimensions:

BeSafe was selected for the battery side because the H50 cabinet is rated for outdoor deployment (IP54, C3 anti-corrosion) and operates reliably at high elevation where air density is 30% lower than at sea level. The active air-cooling system was specifically validated for low-air-density operation.

Daily Operating Profile

Yunnan enjoys more than 2,400 sunshine hours per year, with clear-sky conditions dominating October through May. The microgrid is sized for the average daily solar yield minus 30% derating for cloud cover and panel soiling. The BeSafe EMS runs three operating modes automatically:

07:00 – 10:00
Solar Boost. Morning solar output is used directly for villa heating, kitchen, and laundry. Cabinets begin charging from ~40% SOC.
10:00 – 17:00
Full Charge. PV output reaches 280 kW at noon. Cabinets charge to 95% SOC by mid-afternoon. Excess PV is curtailed (or, in summer, used for pool heating).
17:00 – 23:00
Solar Discharge. Cabinet discharge covers the evening peak (villa lighting, HVAC, kitchen). Diesel remains off. Noise level at the villa boundary is below 35 dB — silent.
23:00 – 07:00
Off-Peak Discharge. Cabinets supply overnight heating and security loads. If SOC drops below 25% (heavy occupancy night), the diesel auto-starts and recharges to 60%.

Results — First 12 Months

428,000 kWhAnnual solar generation
87%Reduction in diesel runtime hours
198,000 LDiesel saved annually
USD 340,000First-year diesel cost avoided
525 tCO₂Annual emissions reduction
3.9 yrProject payback period

The economic case was even better than the financial model predicted: a 28% rise in global diesel prices during the project's first year added USD 60,000 of unanticipated savings. The marketing side was equally successful — the resort now markets itself as a "carbon-neutral mountain retreat" and reports a 22% increase in average length of stay and a 15% occupancy rate increase attributable to the new positioning.

Customer Feedback

"We had been told the altitude would limit battery performance, but the H50 cabinets have been flawless through two winters at 2,800 meters. The moment the diesel generators went quiet at night, guest satisfaction scores jumped. We have not had a single power-related complaint since commissioning." — Resort Engineering Director, Yunnan
